Loved Democracy: A Fast Food Product It is one of those critical issues that I have struggled with my whole career, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. I really hope you will expand on your thesis here. Do we stand firmly behind an expensive process that holds out the hope of empowering each individual in these societies or bend to something less?

Thanks for insights and details. I had not heard about the arrests in March 2012 of US soldiers trying to work with the Zetas cartel…very sad. I definitely agree that the U.S. is known for late starts and miscalculations in “winning the peace.” As the current sole “superpower” it is very disappointing that the U.S. is chronically “behind the curve ball” on so many international issues. And throwing money at the problems, late in the game, is becoming less and less of an option with the mounting U.S. National debt. You wrote: “A strategy of containment against our next-door-neighbor, however, seems unlikely to work, especially if the United States does not establish stricter control measures for arms sales along its borders.” And one might add, nor do policies like “fast and furious” that intentional placed automatic weapons in the hands of criminals.
